How to rank on Google

Rankings respond to sequence, not effort.

Why is this page not ranking?

Six questions. It names the one thing blocking you and how long it realistically takes to move.

The answer

Answer the six

Realistically, before this moves

Fix what stops Google crawling and understanding the site, target searches you can realistically win rather than the largest terms, then build pages that answer those searches better than whatever currently ranks. Internal linking is the cheapest lever available and the one most often skipped.

Is it a fit?

Indexed

The page is in the index. If it is not, the other five reasons do not matter yet.

Match

The page answers the search, not the subject. Those are different things.

Citation

Somebody links to it. A page nobody references rarely climbs on its own.

The plan

Do these six, in order

A time against each one and a way to tell it is finished.

  1. Clear what blocks the crawl

    Indexing, robots, canonicals and render.

half a day · Done when the live test in Search Console comes back clean

  2. Give each page one buying query

Intent to buy, not intent to browse.

1 day · Done when no two pages target the same query

  3. Answer the query in the first fifty words

Then prove it for the rest of the page.

1 day a page · Done when the answer is visible without scrolling

  4. Link from what ranks to what should

Descriptive link text, not read more.

2 hours · Done when the target page has four internal links or more

  5. Structure it so a machine can quote it

Short answer first, headings that match what people type.

2 hours · Done when every heading is a question someone searches

  6. Rewrite everything at positions eight to twenty

    The first screen, monthly.

1 day a month · Done when the list is empty or re-queued

Ranking is not a trick any more, and it has not been for years. It is a sequence: let the crawler in, target searches that real buyers make, publish the best answer on the page, and connect it to everything else you have written.

The order below matters.

01.

Fix what blocks the crawl

Before writing anything new, make sure what exists can be reached and read. Every page needs a canonical, a unique title and description, and a status of two hundred rather than a redirect chain. The sitemap should list only live, indexable URLs and be submitted in Search Console.

Then check what is indexed rather than what you assume is.

02.

Target searches buyers make

Target the language buyers use, not the language the industry uses. People search for the problem in their own words long before they search for your category, and the category term is usually the most competitive phrase available.

Favor specific over broad.

03.

Write the best page for the query

Look at what currently ranks for the phrase and be honest about whether you can do better. Not longer, better. More specific, more current, more usable, from someone who has done the work rather than someone summarizing others.

Answer the question in the first screen rather than making people scroll past an introduction.

04.

Build internal links like an argument

Internal links are how you tell a search engine which pages matter and how they relate. Link from your guides to the service they support and back, use anchor text that describes the destination, and make sure nothing important sits more than a few clicks from the homepage.

Think of it as an argument rather than a menu.

05.

Structure for AI answers

A growing share of searches now end in a generated answer rather than a click, and being the source that answer is drawn from is the new front page. That rewards structure: clear headings that match real questions, short direct answers underneath them, and facts stated plainly.

Schema helps machines parse what a page is: HowTo for a procedure, FAQPage for questions, Organization for who you are.

06.

Refresh what almost ranks

The fastest wins on any established site are the pages already sitting just outside the top results. They have proven relevance and need a push rather than a rewrite. Pull the queries where you rank between eight and twenty and start there.

Update the page against what people are searching, add the sections it is missing, refresh anything dated.

WHERE IT GOES WRONG

Publishing once and abandoning; rankings compound or decay, nothing in between.

Chasing volume keywords with no buying intent.

Buying links; the penalty costs more than the shortcut ever earned.

WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
Search Console is verified and the sitemap lists only live indexable URLs.
Every page has a unique title, a unique description, and a self-referencing canonical.
Target phrases reflect how buyers describe the problem, not how the industry names it.
Each cluster has a clear center page with supporting pages linking inward.
Headings match real questions and the answer sits directly underneath them.
Pages ranking between eight and twenty are reviewed and improved before new ones are written.

Questions we get

The ones that come up on almost every call.

How long does ranking take?

For a newer site, specific low-competition phrases can move within two to three months.

Do we need to publish constantly?

No, and volume without depth is now actively counterproductive.

Does any of this still matter with AI answers?

It matters differently.

Should we pay for links?

No.

Ranking is only worth what the traffic converts to, so the number to have before funding any of this is what one inquiry is worth. The inquiry value calculator works it out from four figures you already have, and below roughly a fifty percent close rate it will usually show that five points of conversion beats ten percent more visitors and costs nothing to acquire. If you are not yet sure search is the constraint at all, the business health check covers six operating areas in about five minutes.
